A 78-year-old woman was struck and killed by a driver while walking along White Plains Road in the Bronx on Saturday night, according to police.

The deadly crash occurred at approximately 10:24 p.m. on May 24 at the intersection of White Plains Road and East 216th Street, within the confines of the 47th Precinct in Williamsbridge.

According to the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad, the victim was walking northbound in the roadway on White Plains Road when she was hit from behind by a 2024 Toyota RAV4, driven by a 56-year-old woman who was also traveling northbound. Investigators determined that the vehicle struck the pedestrian from the rear, causing severe head trauma.

The woman was rushed by EMS to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where she was pronounced dead. Her name is being withheld pending family notification.

The driver remained at the scene and has not been arrested, though the NYPD confirmed the investigation remains active. No charges have been filed as of press time.

The NYPD continues to lead the investigation, while the city Department of Transportation is expected to review the street design at the crash site.
